Va. gov McDonnell signs offshore energy bills

forbes.com -- RICHMOND, Va. -- Gov. Bob McDonnell signed into law Wednesday offshore drilling legislation intended to realize his goal of making Virginia the East Coast's energy superpower.

The bills supporting offshore oil and gas exploration and directing royalties from drilling back to Virginia each hinge on actions by the federal government and Congress.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is expected to announce his decision soon whether the government will move forward with the sale of oil and gas leases in a triangular tract 50 miles off of the Virginia coast. The 2.9 million acres has an estimated 130 million barrels of oil and 1.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

McDonnell said the bill backing offshore exploration is intended to signal to Salazar the state's official endorsement of

Sale-a-czar needs to be booted. He's wasting American resources and destroys what little environmental attraction the US still has. Maybe we should call this the wasteland formerly known as America, brought to you courtesy of Ken Sale-a-Czar.

So, if a foreign oil company wants to drill in VA, do you actually expect them to pay 70% of the royalties back to VA. I think not. The Gov't will make a concession and VA will get nothing but large oil rigs off shore will the potential for leaks and spills all over their nice coast.

Sounds like a great deal to me!!!

How fast can the Federal gouvernment and the greenies screw up this idea? Bet the greenies are already circling the wagons and planning on how to derail any project like this.

Elections DO make a difference. Hurray for Gov. McDonnell. Making a difference for the better.

Imagine, the goal of becoming the East Coast's superpower.

With the rest of the East Coast being emasculated and impotent, that should be a cake walk.

Whoops! Stop the engines. It hinges upon federal government approval. By Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

What chance does Virgina have with that stranglehold around their neck?

The EcoNutz have control of the fed govt. They will scratch Virginia's plans unless it meets the greenie agenda.

And oil is not a good thing to the tree huggers.

Elections DO make a difference. Break free of the slow death the EcoNutz are putting us through.

This could be a success, as long as there government does not over pay and if there really is that much fuel off the coast of Virgina. There could also be a lot of hidden costs as well.

This is a grand political move that does nothing. Without action in Congress to permit drilling, nothing will happen and McDonnell can blame Washington. Without Federal approval, no new nuclear facilities will be built. Even if a nuclear plant were proposed, McDonnell will be out of office on term limits before the approvals are secured. As for coal, Virginia has been coal production and exporting for years. The real headline is "Brilliant Political Move."

An editorial in today's WSJ says Secretary Salazar is holding up offshore drilling for at least another 2 years. And you can bet he doesn't care what the states want.

North Carolina should do the same thing as Virginia with regard to oil exploration off the coast.

And there should be more oil drilling on the right and left coasts. Drilling technology has improved so much since the previous oil spills on the coast beaches that there should be no problems whatsoever.

This should take away some of the imports, and also financially help Virginia, both with revenue, and jobs. Go VA.
