U.S. drivers slow to embrace all-electric vehicles

USA Today -- DETROIT -- All-electric vehicles that you plug-in overnight are a tough sell with drivers afraid of becoming stranded with few charging stations in operation across the nation. Consumers want hybrids that combine gas with battery power, such as the Toyota Prius, or that plug in but have a backup gas tank, such as the Chevrolet Volt.

That sentiment is reflected in the latest market numbers.

Sales of the all-electric Nissan Leaf, which can travel about 75 miles on a single overnight charge, plummeted 69 percent in June from a year earlier. Meanwhile, sales of various models of Toyota Prius hybrids are selling as fast as the automaker can ship them.

EVs have their place. Most people don't travel more than 40 miles in a day. Even a while back, GB did a poll and it showed that (aside from studies that also found the same).

A car that can go 50 miles before it needs to be charged overnight, and only costs $50000? What's not to like?

I don't think it would be so slow to be embraced, if a toy price tag was put on them. Currently they are priced at levels a bit too high for the average consumer to jump on, not to mention reliability for heavy daily use.

The all-electric idea is cool, but honestly, what do you do when you want to go more than 75 miles?

why shouldn't we be slow to embrace them: they cost to much, they will overload the power grid, they will run up YOUR power bill if you're dumb enough to buy one, when battery replacement time comes, heaven knows what kinda gov't crap you will have to go through to get new batteries, and what happens when you run outta battery power, and switch to gas, only to discover you have 100 miles left before you reach your destination, and you have a 75 mile gas range ??..

i can just fill my tank with non-ethanol gas, and go..when i get low on gas, i just re-fill with non-ethanol gas..and i'm not causing a brown-out..

Until technology breakthroughs allow an electric powered vehicle to meet 100% of the same capabilities as its fossil fuel powered competitors at the same capital outlay, there will never be a mass adoption of electric vehicles.

All-electric cars won't gain traction until you can "fuel up" in an hour or less at a plug-in station that's not urban-bound. I don't want to need to find a whole foods so I can plug in on a trip.
