it was known (perhaps not widely) that the dispersant used was NOT approved in the US but only by France for the very reason - it's high toxicity.

martinman: agree on The Big Pretender's lack of safety concern and laissez-faire attitude, but please remember, BP no longer stands for British Petroleum. They are 39% American owned, plus, they did officially change their name back in the late 80s / early 90s.

Why does his amaze anyone?
Not only does this continue to re-emphasize British Petroleum's long-term pattern of sherking safety and corporate responsibility, as well as a consistent pattern of deceiving the fedreal government and general public throughout the ENTIRE course of events of this massive leak, IT IS THE SAME THING THAT BRITISH PETROLEUM DID FOLLOWING THE EXXON-VALDEZ SPILL.
British Petroleum was placed in charge of the Exxon-Valdez spill clean-up. And just like it has done in this incident, British Petroleum relied on heavy use of Corexit to disperse the crude oil where it would remain below the surface. They then went back and "surface" cleaned the area, and made declaration in/to the press about how they were having problems finding more oil to recover.

If you want to be perfectly accurate Cobra, the news is all of 100 days old. That is when BP began poisoning our Gulf of Mexico with their vile spew. I won't eat a piece of seafood from there for at least 30 years.
Good luck to the oil apologists!

It's not easy being a whistleblower because people don't really want the truth. We can't handle it. What if you kneev Gulf seafood were poison? Would you stop eating it? Or would you sate your appetite and forget or deny? Then in a decade or two you would come down with a neurolgic condition because of the heavy metals like mercury, arsenic and lead or cancer from the hydrocarbons like benzene and toulene and wonder how you got sick.

But of course you are so sure that someone else would have handled it well.

If Obama had not wanted his agenda of cap and trade this would not have gone on as long as it has. He would have suspended the Jones act and allowed countries like Holand and Denmark help who have experience with dikes. He could have allowed those in the gulf to build dikes to protect their coastlines. The protection of the coastlines is the federal government's responsibility. How about the skimmers that were staged stratigically around the country that never moved to the aid of the gulf because maybe a crisis might happen at these strategic sites. Meanwhile the area what was spoiled had few skimmers. One area got gear on their own initiative and while the oil had not arrived yet the gvt took the skimmers they had paid for and when the oil arrived that community was left without. Well done socialist Obama!

davmoo: You can have the oil remain a gooey mess in the water. Or you can have the dispersants. Pick one.
Or you can spend a lot of money and skim off every last drop. Now pick one.
Spending money can't be that hard for a nation that spends over a trillion dollars on useless wars without blinking an eye, right?

altima2008: This whole mess is BP will get off the hook somehow and us taxpayers will get screwed under nobamas watch!
But if a Repub had been President he would have made sure that BP paid every last penny for this mess. Yeah, right....
You want to blame someone for letting corporations off the hook? Blame all politicians and the system that lets companies buy them. And get off your comfy couch and make your voice heard to reform the system. By sitting there and blaming "Nobama" you are just a pompous hypocrite.

We know that when the oil is dispersed in small particles microbial degradation is accelerated. That part is good. What we don’t know is what happens to the dispersant chemicals themselves. Do they degrade over time and what are the end products? Exactly what is Corexit anyway? I’ve heard no discussion of these aspects.

Any chemicals used to disperse oil (or used in anything else) will have undesirable secondary effects on people, animals and the environment.
