Cars' total fuel efficiency hits all-time high in 2012

USA Today -- The average fuel efficiency of new cars hit an all-time in the first half of this year, according to new research released today by a Michigan auto-industry research firm.

The average rate was 23.8 miles per gallon, up 1.1 mpg over the same period in 2011, said Alan Baum, principal of Baum & Associates in West Bloomfield.

He attributed the improvement -- along with stronger new car sales for 2012 – to the increasing number of fuel-efficient cars in all segments, consumers' purchasing fuel-efficient larger vehicles, and the fact that the current model year marks the start of the U.S. government's requiring automakers to increase their label ratings to 27.3 by 2016.

Higher gas mileage benefits not just consumers who are concerned about the environment or what they spend on gas, ...

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Three spelling errors in one sentence complaining about USA Today's "grammer." [sic]

That seems good but you would think that the average would be even higher.

I think the consumer deserves more than a 1.1 mpg improvement. But of course we take what we get instead of demanding better.

Dosen't USA Today edit thier articles for grammer? Re-read the first sentence, "The average fuel efficiency of new cars hit an all-time in the first half of this year". Oh, they hit an all-time did they?

Even if gas prices were A LOT LOWER than they are now, fuel efficiency in cars would continue to improve through the years. Always looking for cars that save gas/save money and perform better.

With so many motorists complaining about high gas prices you do not see to many driving to conserve the gas that they have purchaced. So many of them race past me to get to the next red light. I always watch ahead & play the light so I am not having to stop at it or at least still be rolling when I get to the intersection, many times I am still going & roll right ahead of them again.

Higher efficiency is good news but 23.8 mpg is a miserable number. It should be greater than that now and should be double that within 12 to 15 years. Lots of work to do.

Having high mileage can be a way too save money. It will also depend on how often, how far, and at what speed the vehicles goes.

There is another reason for getting them as well. That is because a number of high mileage autos come with low prices. That is good with a low economy of today.

The two passenger vehicles which attributed to the better mileage are dangerous and death traps. Bring back the Lincoln Town Cars.

Americans are wanting to buy fuel efficient vehicles. It's good that the car makers are producing them.
