American Pain at the Gas Pump is Self-Inflicted

Bloomberg -- American drivers feel less “pain at the pump” than all but a handful of other nations – most of which major oil producers that heavily subsidize fuel prices. That’s the conclusion of Bloomberg.com’s quarterly gasoline price ranking, and one that’s at odds with the experience of many Americans.

If filling the tank in the U.S. is as relatively painless as the ranking shows, why do many Americans say it hurts so much?

The gas ranking first ran in May, when U.S. gasoline prices spiked, to put some of the campaign-season economic and political debate into perspective. The pain factor is calculated by dividing a nation’s average price per gallon of gasoline by its average daily income. In other words, it’s the share of a person’s wallet needed to buy a gallon of gasoline in each country.

Another thing to think about; in Europe, people may not have to travel long distances to see friends, relatives or commute to work. Many Europeans find going 30-50 Km. is beyond any comprehension; 50 km. may take them through many countries. In N. America friends and relatives may live hundreds of miles or kilometres away; equivalent to going through 10 countries in Europe.
Yes, maybe I'm exaggerating, but you get my drift, N. Americans are driving greater distances as compared to Europeans.
This is not self-inflicted "per se"; N. American, social conventions due to greater distances demands that we continue to drive greater distances, to meet our obligations.

".. pain factor is calculated by dividing a nation’s average price per gallon of gasoline by its average daily income ..."

More Bloooomerberg junk...

Might the PAIN have to do with how MUCH of the expensive stuff is purchased, not just ONE gallon?

Who the heck writes this stuff? If we had sane energy and Middle East policies, gas would be under $2 a gallon!

The truth is that Europe and much of the remaining civilized world is "washed up" and the last bastion of freedom yet unconquered is America. If America falls into complete subjugation along with the remainder of the world, there will be a dark age such as not been seen for a long time.

The only reason that Europe has been spared the "sooner" enslavement that is coming is that too many Americans (liberal, conservative, Democrats, Republicans, etc.) would possibly "wake up" and join the effort to stop it.

I don't know which is worse, those who leave two letter comments or those who just copy and paste the same, lame, bumper sticker slogans on all of the forums.

At least attempt to think, fellas.

Self-inflicted / elected because we elected Bozama.

If you still need a reason to defeat Obama then consider his administration’s intense effort to deprive America of the energy it needs to function and compete in the world.

If a foreign nation had launched an attack on America to destroy its coal-fired plants, to shut down its coal mines, and to thwart its ability to drill for oil and natural gas, we would be at war with it.

Obama is at war with America.

Right! It's all our fault that the big oil companies continually gouge us, pocket the proceeds, beg for and get gov't subsidies and cry poor-mouth!

The US has had incredibly low fuel prices forever. We should be grateful that gasoline has remained cheap, not complaining about it. If it was $8 or $10 there would be reason for complaint.

I think you may have missed the point of the article, @Ply440GTX. We have relatively low gas prices compared to the average salary but we make it up in the amount of gas we use and hence, there's the pain at the pump.
